Welcome to Mickel Therapy
Has this doc found a cure for ME?
A Scots doctor believes he has found a cure for two crippling illnesses that have 150,000 sufferers in Britain alone. Dr David Mickel claims to have developed effective treatment to deal with the closely linked conditions of Fibromyalgia and ME. Based in Moray, Dr Mickel (34) has spent the past 18 months testing out his theory with astonishing results. All 39 of the patients in his pilot psychotherapy-based programme are now free of debilitating symptoms such as headaches, chronic tiredness, lack of concentration and severe muscle aches. Patients say he has completely turned their lives around. Now, in conjunction with London-based psychologist, Dr. John Eaton, Dr. Mickel is close to opening a series of private clinics in Moray, Edinburgh and London.
Dr Mickel has quit his job as a GP in Elgin to push his plans through, and a number of new therapists are currently training to share the expected workload. 'We have been met with some scepticism and it's true we haven't proved our hypothesis scientifically. But the evidence is in the people who are 100 per cent better than they were before.' Dr Mickel first became interested in ME when a former girlfriend fell victim to the illness. Despite his medical background he felt powerless to help, although he knew his girlfriend was not, as some doctors insisted, suffering from depression. That prompted him to find out as much as possible and this quest for knowledge led him to study a field known as 'mind-body medicine', which has become increasingly popular amongst American scientists. Through this Dr. Mickel learned the importance of the hypothalamus, an area of the brain which controls the endocrine glands which are responsible for our hormones. Now he believes ME sufferers have an 'overheating' hypothalamus which brings on the symptoms. According to Dr. Mickel, this happens because the subconscious mind is trying to alert the patient to an unresolved mental crisis by creating a physical problem. 'We don't use hypnosis or medication to treat patients,' he says. 'Instead we use language to tap into the messages from the unconscious mind which are causing the symptoms. It proves the power of the mind over illnesses and highlights the mistake we've been mistaking in medicine by separating the mind from the body.'
Pia Morgaine (52) had been suffering from ME for 25 years when she heard about Dr Mickel's on-trial therapy. Although wary after past disappointments, she was still willing to travel from Colorado in the US to take a chance on the remedy. In the end it took just three months to put being bed-ridden and unable to hold down a job behind her and see her healthy completely turned around. 'I had been ill for a large part of my life and it was really challenging when I was asked to try and pinpoint exactly when my symptoms started' she said. 'It seemed the symptoms began shortly after a profound experience I'd gone through but at the time I was unaware of the impact this had on me. As I understand it, these symptoms are messengers trying to get your attention for something you haven't consciously recognised. The transformation I've enjoyed is remarkable - it has given me a new lease of life.'
